Troubleshooting High / Low Water Temperature Lights or Messages

Troubleshooting High / Low Water Temperature Lights or Messages

High and low water temperature warning lights follow the general rule that red means the unit has stopped generating chlorine as a protective measure. Warning messages are also indicators that chlorine production has been shut down or, in certain systems, an indication that chlorine output is being limited or capped. Cooler water has lower conductivity and trying to pass current through the low temperature water stresses the equipment, while high temperatures present their own set of problems.

In both cases, air in the cell can contribute to the situation, but to cause the problem would almost certainly trigger a low flow warning too.

Low Water Temperature

The electrical conductivity of water drops as the water temperature goes down; as the strain on the SCG to pass current rises, the systems are designed to stop or reduce output at specific temperatures.

Cool/Cold Water

Just as different systems either shut down chlorine production completely while others limit the output level, the “trigger” temperature can vary by brand and model as well. Happily, microbial growth will slow as well, cutting the need for chlorine, but as long as anyone plans to enter the water, the normal Free Chlorine level should be maintained. In this instance, what might otherwise be considered a trouble light is a helpful guide for knowing that you may need to temporarily supplement the SCG with some liquid chlorine.

Deposits/Scaling on Cell and Temperature Sensor

Sometimes, this light / message will be accompanied by a Cell Light (also Check Cell or Cell Maintenance) and so the first step is to clean your cell.

If you clear both lights, you’re done. If the Low Temperature issue isn’t cleared, then read on.

Sensor Failure

If your water temperature isn’t low and your cell is clean, then indications are that you have a problem with the system’s temperature sensor and you should seek assistance from the manufacturer or an authorized service facility.

High Water Temperature

The temperature threshold for a high temperature warning is well above safe water temperatures and as with a (false) cold water warning, you are probably dealing with deposits/scaling on the cell and/or sensor or sensor failure. Actual high water temperature as a cause is quite rare. As with the low water temperature warning, review for the cell condition and possible sensor failure.

Sensor Failure

If your water temperature isn’t very high and your cell is clean, then indications are that you have a problem with the system’s temperature sensor and you should seek assistance from the manufacturer or an authorized service facility.
