Troubleshooting a Leaking Salt Cell

Troubleshooting a Leaking Salt Cell

Any discussion of a leaky salt cell has to begin with identifying where the cell or cell assembly is leaking. While the vast majority of leaks occur at the connections, we’ll discuss the other possibilities first.

Cell Housing

Leaks from the cell housing are generally caused by some sort of blow to the housing or by frozen water in the housing. This is when you prefer to own a system that uses bare-electrode style cells because cracks in cell housings are rarely repairable and replacement will typically be required. Compounding the problem, this sort of damage is unlikely to be covered under warranty, but reach out to your manufacturer and see.

Cell Cord

If the leak is emanating from around the cell cord, there won’t be any way for you to repair a leak of that nature and cell replacement will be required. In these instances, you should reach out to the manufacturer or authorized warranty provider and seek assistance.

Cell Connections

As mentioned already, this is the primary source of cell leaks and dealing with it begins with removing the salt cell and inspecting for:

  • Debris on mating surfaces
  • Damaged, flattened or incorrectly placed o-rings
  • Damaged threads
  • Cracked connectors
  • Cross-threading

Drying connections and reconnecting affords an opportunity to exercise particular care in reassembly with regard to alignment, avoiding under and overtightening, correctly placed o-rings, clean surfaces, and so on. In addition, the precise source of a leak can be more apparent when first turned on and the leak stands out from the dry parts. Reach out as needed to your manufacturer or authorized dealer.
