There are a number of common rules-of-thumb suggesting you simply run your pump 8-10 hours per day or that you operate it 1 hour for every 10 degrees Fahrenheit. However, It’s generally recommended that a residential pool should “turnover” its water 1-2 times per day. By that, it means your pump should circulate 15-30,000 gallons per day for a 15,000 gallon pool. Looking at this another way, if your pump flows 50 gallons per minute, then it should take 300 minutes (5 hours) for a single turnover. Consequently, this pool should circulate water for up to 10 hours per day and more if it receives heavy use. Adjusting these calculations to fit your specific situation will provide you with the optimal runtime.
Absolutely. Your old single speed pump is one of the worst power hogs you own. A new Variable Speed Pump (VSP) can save you up to 85% in energy costs. In addition to the programmability and very low noise level, you can anticipate a rapid payoff of the new pump in energy savings, depending on the length of your pool season.
