Choosing the Right Pump
A good pool pump is a critical part of a pool filtration system. After years of wear and tear, it may be time to replace your pump — particularly if your pump is making loud noises, leaking, or causing high energy bills. Here’s what to look for:
Energy Efficiency
If you want your pool pump to consume less power and save you money, energy efficiency is an important factor. Variable-Speed Pumps are considered to be the most energy efficient because they use programmable TEFC permanent magnet motors, which means they provide greater filtration and circulate more water while using significantly less electricity.
Voltage
Pool pumps are typically available in 110 volt or 220 volt models. It’s important to check if the voltage of your new pump matches the voltage of your existing pump. For truly energy efficient pumps 220-240 volt power is needed, so if by chance you have 110 volt power you may need to add a line to accommodate a higher voltage pump.
Total Horsepower
The total horsepower (THP) is the power the pump has to move water through a system. Having higher horsepower means greater circulation. Consider your pool’s size, number of water features, presence of a spa or sweeper, and check your filter’s flow rating.
