General FAQ
Pump sizing can be complex and factor in a number of variables. On new construction, the pool builder is in a position to advise you on your requirements.
If you are replacing pumps, then you should have a sense of how well the original size performs on your pool and choose accordingly.

There are a number of common rules-of-thumb suggesting you simply run your pump 8-10 hours per day or that you operate it 1 hour for every 10 degrees Fahrenheit.
However, It’s generally recommended that a residential pool should “turnover” its water 1-2 times per day. By that, it means your pump should circulate 15-30,000 gallons per day for a 15,000 gallon pool.
Looking at this another way, if your pump flows 50 gallons per minute, then it should take 300 minutes (5 hours) for a single turnover. Consequently, this pool should circulate water for up to 10 hours per day and more if it receives heavy use.
Adjusting these calculations to fit your specific situation will provide you with the optimal runtime.
Absolutely. Your old single speed pump is one of the worst power hogs you own. A new Variable Speed Pump (VSP) can save you up to 85% in energy costs.
In addition to the programmability and very low noise level, you can anticipate a rapid payoff of the new pump in energy savings, depending on the length of your pool season.

Q:
Does this pump have a set of auxiliary contacts? I have a 400,000BTU gas heater that requires a certain amount of flow across the heat exchanger to operate safely and efficiently. If not, can you offer a simple solution to that requirement? I currently have a 2.5HP 2 speed pump running through a timer, a pair speed dip switches, and a pair of relays (Blue Haven control panel). There's 1 relay for each speed. The high speed control circuit interlocks with the heater.
Thanks.

Q:
If I connect this to an external timer, will this start self priming when power is connected? Also can you set the default speed it will then lower itself too automatically? It needs to retain this setting since external timer will disconnect power.

Traditional pumps operate at set, unchangeable speeds. Those speeds are almost always higher than required. As a result, they overpower the jobs they’re assigned to do, which wastes energy. The SmartFlo pump allows custom programming of optimum pump speeds for specific tasks such as filtering, heating, cleaning, spa jets and waterfalls. For virtually all applications, the optimum speed is lower than the preset, unchangeable speeds of older pumps. When water moves more slowly for longer periods, it helps reduce the occurrence of algae that forms more easily when water is pumped briskly and then allowed to rest for long intervals. Your filter works more effectively because it has more time to sift out particles from the water, and because particles aren’t forced through the filter media under needlessly high pressure. Automatic chemical dispensers and chlorinators also work better when water is kept moving.

Typical pump sizing would be for pools ranging from: 15,000 - 50,000 gallons
Please consult a professional to ensure proper pump sizing. A pump's capacity should ensure 1-2 circulation "turnovers" of the water in the pool through the filter each day. Pools with water features & pressure-dependent equipment may require greater pump capacity. Properly sized variable-speed pumps typically have more total horsepower than the corresponding single-speed pump.
