FAQ

Q: what is the difference between SJ & the RJ systems?

Asked by: Bill - 3/6/2017
A: Great question. Beside the main differences in power and lifespan, here are a few of the things that set them apart once they are in your hands:

The SJ models are very simple, easy-to-use systems. They have status lights that verify the unit is working, tell you at what power level it is set, and whether you need to clean the cell or add salt to the pool. Because it is simple there is less to think about, it is particularly low maintenance (no acid is required to clean the cell), and it is also less expensive.

The RJ and RJ+ models are the flagship systems. They are more powerful and longer lasting. They have a digital screen and touch keypad, giving you more control and diagnostics. It displays the salinity level in real time, calculates the running average, displays the water temperature, and displays the electronic performance levels of the cell so you can see exactly how things are working. The power levels on the RJ models can be turned up and down in smaller increments. RJ models also synchronize more easily with variable-speed pumps if you plan to upgrade.

So the SJ gives you simplicity and a huge value, and the RJ gives you top of the line performance and control.

Q: I have an above ground pool and my pump uses 110v power, will this work for me?

Asked by: Linda - 3/27/2017
A: Yes, this system can work with either 220v or 110v power. It is set at the factory to accept 220v, which is most common for pools. However, it is made so you can easily change it to accept 110v by following the printed directions. Unlike a motor, it won't work any better or worse on either voltage, you only want to match what your pump uses so they can work on the same circuit together.

Q: what size are the openings on the cell one and a half inch or two inch?

Asked by: steve rizzi - 8/24/2017
A: The openings are made to accept two inch pipes into them. For inch and a half, you would simply used two reducer bushings that you can pick up from your local hardware store.

Q: Do I need the sacrificial anode for my system and does one come with the SJ-55 salt system?

Asked by: Ron - 5/20/2017
A: No, sacrificial anodes are absolutely not required, and haven't been needed for saltwater pools in decades. People still sell them because they can sell a $5 piece of metal for $50.

Q: will this work with 2.5 inch piping?

Asked by: scott - 12/21/2017
A: Pools typically have 2" or 1.5" plumbing. Keep in mind these are ID (inner diameter) measurements. You might be measuring the outside of your pipe, which might make it seem like bigger pipe. The SJ-Series models accept standard 2" pipe into its cell unions, and if you have a different plumbing size, you can simply use standard pvc pipe adapters available at the hardware store.

Q: Will this unit work with a variable speed pump on very low speed (1000 rpm) ?

Asked by: KJ - 12/4/2018
A: Short answer is that they can, but it really depends on "flow rate" and not "pump rpm". Your pool will have a unique amount of "head" or resistance that determines what flow ("gallons per minute, GPM") you get from your pump's chosen speed. A salt system just needs enough water flowing to keep the cell full of water, which is typically very low GPM. Call us for more details, we will be glad to make sure you get the right equipment that will work well with your current setup.

Q: I have a variable speed pump with built in timer. Do I need a timer for the SJ-55 also or will it shut itself off when the water stops moving ?

Asked by: CharlieB - 3/7/2020
A: With this model you would want a timer that coordinates it's run time with your pumps program's times.

Q: What does the yellow light mean on an SJ55 salt system?

Asked by: James Bagley - 5/28/2020
A: If you're getting the service indicator, you'll want to confirm that the cell is fully clean, water is filling the cell, the water temp is over 65, and the salt level is 4000ppm.
