Wish I had been using this years ago
I’ve handled my own pool chemistry for over 15 years, and the pH used to shoot from a perfect 7.5 up to way past 8.0 within a couple of days - until I added Oxygen Borates. After adding it, the pH now drifts only to maybe around 7.6 or 7.7 over the course of a week, which is totally manageable. So I top it off with a bit of acid weekly (if I remember) instead of chasing it every few days. It isn’t a magic lock at 7.5 like you might wish the water to stay at, but it keeps the spikes in check and the water feels noticeably smoother. For the first time in ages, I’m fiddling with chemistry all the time.

Q: How does this work?

A: This borate blend buffers pH increases, similar to how alkalinity buffers pH decreases. In other words, it helps keep pH from increasing. Additionally, this particular borate blend is extremely easy to add (some borates are very high pH, requiring you to add lots of acid immediately after). Even better, it has additional benefits, such as preventing algae growth and improving the look & feel of the water. For more information, you might like this article about borates and what they do.

Q: Salt water chlorine generating pools inherently raise pH. How does this stabilize and prevent that?

A: Borates won't prevent pH from rising, rather, they mitigate the increase in pH. Borates accomplish this by creating what chemists term a buffer solution. Buffer solutions involve acids, and their conjugate bases or bases and their conjugate acids. Suffice it to say that buffer solutions resist changes in pH and so while salt chlorinators push the pH up, the buffer solution created by borates will help to slow that increase and make it easier to maintain a stable pH in your pool.
