Why Upgrade to a Larger Size?

In almost all cases, over-sizing is preferred; larger systems don't have to work as hard to do the same job, and have the extra capacity to handle situations like peak-season use or temporary water chemistry issues. The industry standard is to have a salt chlorinator with a max capacity that is 1.5x to 2x your actual pool size, and bigger is typically even better. More sizing information

What Benefits Will I Get When Upgrading?

When a salt chlorinator is over-sized, its able to make the precise amount of chlorine that your pool needs without working as hard. This means that its salt cell will last longer since it isn't being used as much. Even better, you'll have more power in reserve to "turn it up" on demand and create more chlorine more quickly. That way, you'll have the confidence that you can easily knock out any problems that might arise in the pool before algae blooms and it gets out of control. That's why we say its wise to over-size - its a better long term investment and it provides an ideal experience.

Why Does an Oversized System Last Longer?

Your pool needs a certain amount of chlorination every day to keep it blue and clear. When you choose a higher capacity salt chlorinator, you're not doing so to over-chlorinate your pool. Rather, its going to be able to generate just that right amount of chlorine while running at a lower output setting and/or while running less time throughout the day. This greatly reduces the wear-and-tear on the salt cell, which is a consumable part. This is an ideal scenario, being able to put "less miles" on your system every day, while having plenty of chlorination power in reserve if you need it.

How a Larger System Can Save You Money

When you are selecting a new Salt Chlorinator or a Replacement Cell for an existing system, spending more can actually save you money over time. The reason this works out is that the incremental cost of the larger system/cell is usually less than the increased capacity you’re purchasing.

For example, at the time of writing, the CircuPool RJ45+ costs 16% more than the RJ30+, but delivers 33% more chlorine. Similarly, the RJ60+ can be had for only about 15% more than the RJ 45+ and yet produce 55% more chlorine! The same relationship generally extends across brands and models as well as with complete systems or just replacement cells.

But, do you really need that much chlorine? Well, you may not need it right away, but that higher output means you can operate at a lower setting and that lower setting translates directly into significantly longer cell life. It’s hard to argue with numbers like these.
