Q: Is this over kill for a oval 18 x 33 48 inch pool out in direct sun light in south east texas

A: That calculates out to about 16,000 gallons. You could probably go down a size, but a larger salt chlorinator just works less hard and lasts longer in the end, and also allows you clear the water up faster if it does get cloudy after storms or heavy pool use.
